Reiki (pronounced -ray-kee) means ‘’Universal Life Force.’ The Word ‘Reiki’ can be split into two parts. Rei and Ki. Rei, means Universal, and Ki, means Energy. Believed to have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago, It was rediscovered in Japan in the nineteenth century by Mikao Usui.
Reiki (霊気, /ˈreɪki/) is a Japanese form of energy healing. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which a “universal energy” is said to be transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing. It is a complementary technique and works hand in hand with all other healing modalities including traditional medical treatment. Reiki is not harmful… it always works for the highest good of the person or situation. Reiki is spiritual, but it is not religious. Reiki is not connected to any religious practice in any way whatsoever. Its success is not dependent on any belief, just a willingness to be healed.
Reiki works on all levels to balance the system and unite body, mind, soul, and spirit. It helps keep the body in balance to prevent illness and is also used to treat chronic illness and disease (not to be substituted for medical care).
During the Reiki session the practitioner holds their hands on, or just away from, the recipient’s body. Reiki uses symbols, hand positions, mental intension, loving heart to connect the person to ‘divine light’/ ‘divine energy’/ ‘universal life-force energy’ for the purpose of healing and renewal. It awakens healing ability in both the self and others.
There are many other benefits of Reiki treatments including:
• Reducing stress
• Promoting natural self-healing
• Healing the Body-Mind-Spirit
• Relaxation
• Relieving pain
• Clearing toxins
• Balancing the energies in the body
• Strengthening the immune system
• Promoting creativity
• Treating symptoms and causes of illness
• Releasing blocked and suppressed feelings
All sessions will include an in-depth chat to establish any issues that the client might want to speak about or be experiencing as well as both the client and practitioner need to work together to find the root cause of the problem and be willing to work hand in hand to resolving in aiding their journey to wellbeing.
The experience of Reiki is subjective, changeable, and sometimes very subtle. When activated by the practitioner, Reiki flows through one individual to another through the laying on of hands. The recipient receives only what they need. Reiki is experienced in several different ways. To some there is a feeling of warmth or coldness to the practitioner’s hands. Some people can feel a pulsating rhythm, some feel a trembling sensation or tingling and sometimes, the recipient does not feel anything physical, but experiences a sense of calmness and relaxation within themselves.
People often comment how comforting they find the experience of Reiki to be. An interesting study reported that recipients frequently feel that they are hovering in a threshold state of consciousness, simultaneously aware of their surroundings and deeply indrawn. Some people fall into a deep, sleep like meditative state. Sometimes the experience of Reiki is dramatic, while for other people, the first session may be uneventful, although they feel somehow better afterward. The most common experience is an almost immediate release of stress and a feeling of deep relaxation.
Reiki is cumulative and even people who do not notice much the first time usually have progressively deeper experiences if they continue. Besides the immediate experience of the Reiki, you may notice other changes that continue to unfold as the day goes on: stronger digestion, a sense of being more cantered and poised and less reactive and sleeping deeply that night.
Because Reiki is working on eliminating toxins from the body, people who receive treatments can sometimes feel a little worse for a short while after a session, this is known as a healing crisis, and you should not be alarmed at all.
It simply indicates that the core of the sickness, pain or issue is being brought to the surface so that it can be dealt with effectively by the body’s natural cleansing system. Most people feel better immediately. if you have a session and you feel you do not feel great afterwards, that does not mean you missed something! Reiki works with your body in the way that is most beneficial to you now. Trust in the intelligence of your body and the Reiki energy to work together for your greatest benefit.
A complete Reiki session is offered to a fully clothed recipient who is lying on a treatment table or sitting comfortably supported in a chair.
Most commonly, Reiki is offered through light, non-invasive touch with the practitioner’s hands placed and held on a series of hand locations on the head and front and back of the torso. The placement of the hands should never be intrusive or inappropriate, nor should there be any pressure.
